Lynch Syndrome Public Awareness Day: Upcoming Events!

Hi all!  See the message below from Deb Duquette, a cancer genetic counselor who works for the Michigan Department of Community Health and member of LSSN:

“In 2013, Michigan is celebrating March 22nd with a Lynch syndrome conference on March 8th and/or March 9th in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  It’s free to attend either or both day, and will include Dr. Henry Lynch and other experts as speakers.   Please see attached flyers to learn more.  If any of your Lynch syndrome families would like to attend, please have them contact Marybeth Peters at mpeters@wmcc.org or at 269-373-7450 to register.

For those in other states, it is my understanding that in some states that Governor’s Proclamations can be easy to obtain, and in others that they can be much more difficult.  But, I think it helps to have support for the Governor’s Proclamation from many people.  It may also be helpful if the requests comes from citizens in your state with Lynch syndrome. It may also help to engage the American Cancer Society and multiple providers.  I’d also suggest contacting the cancer section in your state health department to let them know that you’ll be submitting this request and see if they can help in the process and/or dissemination of the Proclamation.

At a national level, in 2012, LSSN authored a CDC blog to honor this day which can be found at: http://blogs.cdc.gov/genomics/2012/03/22/making-universal-screening-for-lynch-syndrome/   Also, CDC and NCI also disseminated information on March 22, 2012 to honor this day through a variety of online media.  LSSN will again ask CDC and NCI if they will be able to disseminate info on March 22, 2013.

We’ll also try to add info on our LSSN website (http://www.lynchscreening.net/ ) regarding March 22nd for future reference.   If you have other examples of events being held in your area, please feel free to share with us and let us know if it’s okay to include this information on our LSSN website.”
